“Exiles… Countering silences”

António Arroio Artistic School, November 2019

During the dictatorship of the Estado Novo, thousands of Portuguese followed the path of exile. This constituted an important contemporary flow of people in the history of Portugal. Men and women who were fleeing repression, prison, colonial war and poverty, followed various paths, including those leading to many European countries, going into exile in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Sweden, Denmark.

The exhibition “#ECOS… Countering silences” is about the memory and the material testimonies of these routes, from the clandestine “salto” (jump) across the border, to the objects that marked everyday life and those that came back in the returning suitcase.
